Did you know that revelation is a primary function of our spirit and is how we hear God? This is why I LOVE sharing about revelation. This topic is one of those spiritual traits that we often unknowingly do, but as Graham Cook says, when we do by intention, what we did by intuition, we achieve acceleration. Let’s take a look at three facts we often don’t think about regarding the mechanics of revelation.
1.) Revelation is the interaction of God’s Spirit with our spirit.
When we experience revelation, the light switch of our spirit is turned on by God’s Spirit in such a way that invisible spiritual realities become practical and tangible. We see that this is exactly what’s happening in the following passage…
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Mathew 16:15-17 (bold mine)
It was Peter’s dialogue with Christ in this passage that the process of God’s Spirit revealing truth to our spirit is brought to light. Jesus spoke to Peter asking him a question. Peter gave the response that came to him, then Jesus showed that the response Peter gave was in fact from God Himself. This is our model today of revelation.
- We interact and dialogue with Christ.
- God the Father speaks to us.
- We receive practical understanding of things that cannot be perceived or understood on their own.
Revelation, an understanding, a knowledge that takes that which is invisible and make it practical is an experience that comes not from study, but by God revealing something to our spirit. This occurs because when we have received the Holy Spirit, we then have the person of Christ himself inside of us, the very Christ in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3). To the measure that we know Christ, talk to Christ, continually abide in Christ, is the measure that the invisible revelatory experience of revelation will be made practical in our everyday experience.
2.) The request of revelation is Jesus first command regarding the Lord’s prayer.
We know that the importance of the pursuit of revelation because it’s the very first thing Jesus commands us to pursue as our spiritual norm in the process of the Lord’s prayer.
Jesus said to pray…
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Mathew 6:10.
Jesus said clearly that we are to pray that the kingdom of heaven would come on earth as it is in heaven. This is the combining of heaven’ s invisible spiritual realities with the physical, earthly realm in a way that is practical and can be experienced. This combining of spirit and physical, the outward and physical manifestation of invisible spiritual realities is the practical mechanics, the outworking of revelation in our normal daily lives.
This idea is so significant that when Jesus gave us instructions on how to pray through the Lord’s prayer his first words were to pray in the outward manifestation of invisible heavenly realities. This is revelation!
3.) The Process of Revelation has been God’s will since the beginning.
This practical manifestation of God on earth has been God’s will since the beginning.
…making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Ephesians 1:9,10 (bold mine)
In Christ, heaven (spiritual realm) and earth (physical realm) have been brought together. This is how we hear, relate to, feel, and/or interact with God who is Spirit and then see to the bringing about of heavenly realities on earth.
God has poured out his spirit on all flesh, however the secrets of the Kingdom have been hidden from the wise and learned. Instead it is those who are hungry for God and have relationship with the Interpreter, the Truth, that have access to practical understanding of that revelation. This is because it is in Christ Himself that all the treasures of wisdom (practical application) and knowledge are hidden.
It is the understanding of these mechanics will allow the process of revelation that has in the past been hidden and unknowingly stumbled upon, to be brought to light and utilized as a daily practical tool that will advance God’s purposes concerning us.
Things to do this week.
1. Take some time to ask Jesus what is on His heart for you. Believe that the things that come to your mind are God’s Spirit, interacting with your spirit to bring encouragement, strengthening, and comfort.
2. Begin your prayer times with asking God to bring heaven, the spiritual realm as it exists in heaven into your daily practical experience. Then be on the lookout this week for heavenly invasions.
3. Remind yourself that it has always been God’s will that heaven and earth come together in Christ and that Christ is in us. As we are the hands and feet of Jesus, ask God how you can be a manifestation of God’s spiritual realities in someone else’s life in a way that builds them up, stirs them up and/or cheers them up.
