Sometimes I would wake up and find myself…
- Frozen and unable to move.
- Unable to breath, or feeling strangled
- Like a thousand pounds were on my chest squeezing the life out of me.
Sometimes the fear in my room would be a palpable thick cloud of darkness and yes, I was afraid. In these times, I discovered a tool that would cut through the fear; through the panic and terror like lightning exploding on a dark night.
There is Power in the Name of Jesus
Growing up I had been taught that the Bible said, ”…he who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Rom 10:13). One night in desperation I tried it. I had awoken from a particularly bad dream; the room was under a blanket of fear and I was struggling to breathe. The words that came from my spirit out of my mouth were simple. I said,” Jesus is Lord.”
What happened next dumbfounded me. Something immediately jerked off my chest and I could breathe. The thick cloud of fear in the room fled as I said it again even louder “Jesus is Lord!” This scenario repeated itself literally hundreds of times in various ways over the years until I was in my mid 20s and was taught about my identity in Christ.
Until then and without fail I must tell you, I learned unequivocally that there is power in the name of Jesus. For the last 20 years, I’ve had almost no attacks of these kind in the night!
Teaching the Next Generation
Now as a father of four boys who have occasionally woken in the night afraid, I wrote a book, Spirit Chronicles: A Power Encounter as a tool to help teach them in a creative way their authority as believers in the name of Jesus. It’s a rhyming book for parents and grandparents of children under 8 years old.
What to do?
You buy the book, read the story, then ask and answer the questions at the back and this disciples them in their authority in the name of Jesus.
I must tell you, it works. One night my five-year-old came into my room late to tell me he was afraid. After reminding him of the story in Spirit Chronicles, we practiced it and together declared, “Jesus is Lord,” over his room, the darkness and his fear. He went back to bed happy, on his own and he slept fitfully through the night.

I would like to personally invite you to try out this tool as a practical resource and practice it with your kids. When you or they encounter a situation anything remotely like what I’ve described above, take some time to declare that Jesus is the Lord over the situation.
The amazing thing is you don’t have to wait for a scary situation before you you begin to teach your children how to overcome by exercising their authority in the name of Jesus. All you have to do is…

I have 4 sons that are as of today between the ages of 16 and 9. None of them struggle with fear in the night. The nights that I used to wake up and there would be a cloud of fear are gone.
