Dreams are one of my absolute favorite ways to hear from God, but have you noticed over time that you have different types of dreams? Let’s take a look at the three different types of dreams most of us experience.
Three Types of Dreams
- Body Dreams – Body dreams are directly related to things happening in the physical realm such as physical feelings that transfer into our dreams. Have you had something crazy happen in a dream, then wake up realizing that the alarm is goin off? Maybe something weird happening to your arm in a dream and you wake up realizing your arm is in a crazy position. These are all examples of body dreams.
- Soul Dreams – Soul dreams come from your own personal mind, will and emotional processing of the world around us and issues we’re dealing with.. The clarity of our soul dreams will be directly affected by what we are watching and listening to throughout the day. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! (Mathew 6:22,23).
If we’re consistently feeding our spirit through prayer and the word of God, then our soul dreams will be more on point. Soul dreams can become God dreams if we process them with the Lord and invite Him to speak into them his heart and mind.
- Spirit Dreams – These dreams originate directly from the spiritual realm, which can have two sources.
1) God Dreams – Come from God for the purpose of revealing the heart and mind of God for us and/or others around us. These come in the context to the nature and character of God which will never depart from his love for us. The purpose of these dreams is to encourage us, build us up, direct us, and reveal God’s heart.
2) Demonic Dreams – Demonic dreams are attacks of the enemy against us. The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, so demonic dreams most often seek to do so by releasing fear, uncertainty and confusion. These dreams sometimes come because we are being effective in the Kingdom and the enemy seeks to interfere with, delay and/or if possible stop the advancement of God’s purposes in and through us.
Sometimes demonic dreams can be indicators of sin or strongholds such as bitterness and/or unforgiveness in our lives that gives the enemy place to attack us. If we wake up from a demonic dream and sense the presence of the demonic, usually manifested through a sense of fear in the room, we take the authority we’ve been given as children of God and rebuke it in the name of Jesus and by the power of his blood, command it to leave and invite the presence of the Holy Spirit to take its place.
Demonic dream used to be scary to me and release fear. Now I just thank the Lord that something that was hidden has been brought to the light so that it can be rightly dealt with. 20 years ago I had a lot of these, primarily as a result of the brokenness of working through sin and trauma in my life. These days, these types of dreams are few and far between and are mostly directly related to intercessory spiritual warfare. Whatever types of dreams you’re having, it’s always important to bring them back to God in simple conversation. God loves to talk, dialogue, and bring revelation to the things that concern us.
Practical exercises for this week…
- Write down any dreams you have.
- Determine what type of dream it was: Body, Soul, or Spirit.
- Ask God if he wants to speak to you through that experience.
Make sure you enjoy this process of receiving revelation; it’s a fantastic and incredible journey to take with God and others!
Go with God.
